Goana după perlele americane (VII).
La început, spaniolii au considerat inepuizabilă rezerva de perle americane. O însemnare din acele vremuri descrie atitudinea optimistă asupra viitorului pescuitului perlelor în regiune:
„I have oftentymes demaunded of summe of these lordes of the Indians, if the place where they accustomed to fysche for pearles beynge but lyttle and narrowe wyll not in shorte tyme bee utterly without oysters if they consume them so faste, they al answered me, that although they be consumed one parte, yet if they go a fyschynge in an other parte or on another coaste of the Ilande, or at an other contrary wynd, and continue fysshing there also untyll the oysters be lykewyse consumed, and then returne ageyne to the fyrste place, or any other place where they fysshed before and emptied the same in lyke maner, they find them ageine as ful of oysters as though they had never bein fysshed. Wherby we may judge that these oysters eyther remove from one place to an other as do other fysshes, or elles that they are engendered and encrease in certeyne ordinaire places.”

Cererea europeană de perle a avut un impact dur asupra bancurilor de scoici din America, iar spre sfârşitul sec. XVI cele cunoscute erau aproape epuizate. În vremurile în care piratul-naturalist William Dampier a vizitat Coasta Perlelor (1681), pescuitul perlelor devenise o activitate la scară redusă. Dampier a făcut cunoscut într-un mod lipsit de echivoc faptul că nici Venezuela, nici Panama, nu mai aveau suficiente perle pentru a stârni interesul piraţilor contemporani. O altă indicaţie asupra problemelor apărute în sec. XVII a fost legată de calitatea perlelor.
În cele din urmă Spania a impus, la mijlocul sec. XVI, restricţii privind pescuitul perlelor, inaugurând un sistem de rotaţie astfel încât nici o insulă să nu poată fi exploatată mai mult de câteva luni. În plus, dimensiunea bărcilor a fost limitată, şi numărul scufundătorilor restricţionat. Este foarte puţin probabil că aceste restricţii au fost aplicate vreodată; din contra, există rapoarte din sec. XVI despre nave de pescuit mai mari, cu mai mulţi scufundători la bord.
